Home Remedies for Teeth Whitening

Teeth are the most attractive aspect of our smile that shines like pearls when we open. Many people fail to preserve that natural white color of the teeth due to various reasons. Whitening of teeth can never be permanent.

Causes for Tooth Discoloration

A tooth has two layers, the outer layer is called enamel and the inner layer is called dentin. The texture and thickness of enamel regulates the color of the teeth. A thin layer of enamel as seen with aging exposes the dentin layer and thus makes the teeth look yellowish.

Tea, coffee, black coffee, or black tea stains your teeth when the mouth is not rinsed after consuming the above drinks.

Mouth needs a rinse after consuming these products like grape juice, red wine, blueberry juice etc., to prevent teeth staining.

Mouth needs to be rinsed soon after consuming energy drinks to prevent discoloration.

Smoking makes the teeth discoloration almost permanent along with gingivitis (damage to the gums) and bad breath.

Certain medications like antibiotics and antihistamines may cause teeth discoloration. Antibacterial mouthwashes made with chlorhexidine  or cetylpyridinium chloride can also stain your teeth.

Consuming a mixture of equal quantities of lemon juice and water, taken once or twice a week helps in maintaining white teeth. Pineapples and oranges increase saliva production that helps in cleaning out the gums and teeth naturally.

Hydrogen peroxide is recommended for individuals to rinse their mouth with a 50:50 mix of water and hydrogen peroxide at least twice in a month. The antiseptic action of hydrogen peroxide avoids the bacteria growth by promoting whiter teeth. Rinse with 50:50 mix of water and hydrogen peroxide for a minute and then spit out.
